We want everyone, everywhere to be able to use a best-of-breed client application from NewsGator, including folks who were not able to use the products historically for whatever reason. Doing this furthers two goals:
1. We can make the overall experience better for everyone. By collecting aggregate usage data from folks using our online platform, we can make sophisticated relevancy calculations, and really surface the content that matters to all of our users.
2. In our enterprise software business, we’ve found tremendous and increasing demand for our client products; making them free continues to seed that market for us.
Rather than spend more solely on marketing, we’ve instead decided to invest in the consumer market by giving our best-of-breed applications away for free to help develop the market for RSS consumption.
Not at all! We’re making more investments than ever in our consumer applications by making them free.
The clients have proven to be tremendous lead generators. When we go into enterprise sales situations today, we’re finding a large number of users are already using our client products. We want to do everything we can to increase that number - because the more people are using RSS in the enterprise, especially using one of our client applications, the more demand there is for NewsGator Enterprise Server and our other server applications.
The client applications record anonymous usage data such as which articles were emailed, which articles were saved in clippings, which feeds get the most clicks, etc. We use this information in our online platform (or our enterprise server) to help make decisions about what content we believe will be most relevant for you and for other users.
If users do not wish to participate, each client has a mechanism to disable the data collection and reporting. Some features, like synchronization, may no longer be available in this case.
We have updated our privacy policy to reflect our continued commitment to respecting the privacy of our customers and will continue to be among those who are calling for greater transparency in data collection efforts by all companies.
The entire NewsGator family of RSS client applications are now free, including NewsGator Inbox, FeedDemon, NetNewsWire, NewsGator Go! for Windows Mobile, NewsGator Go! for BlackBerry/Java, iPhone and HTML mobile applications, and NewsGator Online.
All users who purchased one of our client applications (or renewed a subscription) on or after December 9, 2007 will automatically receive a credit on the credit card they used to make the purchase. Please allow 30 days for us to process these credits.
Your subscription included both free updates and unlimited support for the 12-month period. Updates are now of course free, and we will honor your support contract through the end of your subscription.
NewsGator will no longer be providing direct end-user support via email; community support will be provided via the online forums at http://forum.newsgator.com. Even today, most of our customer support occurs in the forums, so this isn’t a dramatic change.
Users who have an existing subscription will still be entitled to direct end-user support through the end of their subscription term. Support requests can be submitted from the “Account” page within NewsGator Online.
Yes! The pace of innovation on the client applications will only accelerate from here. And remember, we use the same clients in the enterprise - so there is even more pressure to innovate quickly.
A NewsGator account is required to use synchronization and other online-supported features; generally the clients will perform faster and will have more functionality when used with a NewsGator account. However, the desktop clients will still work without an account if desired (mobile applications require an account).
Free accounts now have the same capabilities that premium accounts had in the past; so all users now have access to email edition and other premium features, and all users now have higher limits on the number of smart feeds they can create.
